What is a data analyst?
A data analyst cleans and examines datasets to answer decision questions in a clear, testable way; producing charts is only part of the work.
Data analyst: duties and training
1. Scope and core duties Analysts frame measurable questions, evaluate sources, clean inconsistencies and summarize evidence. They explain uncertainty without confusing correlation with causation. 2. Daily work and tools Spreadsheets, SQL, code and visualization tools support work. Definitions and quality are checked first, steps documented, and results communicated to nontechnical teams. 3. Education and entry Statistics, computing, mathematics and domain studies are possible paths. Demonstrated methods, ethics and examples matter more than a single degree title.
Work, responsibility and career
4. Ethics, safety and responsibility Access to personal data must be limited; small groups can sometimes be reidentified. Biased samples and selective metrics can mislead decisions. 5. Work settings and development Healthcare, finance, government, retail and research employ analysts. Experiment design, data engineering and product analytics offer development routes.
