What is a dentist?
A dentist assesses oral health, helps prevent and diagnose disease, and provides treatment within professional authority. The role extends beyond fillings.
Dentist: duties and training
1. Scope and core duties Dentists examine mouths, assess decay and gum disease, decide when imaging is needed and plan care. Prevention, restoration and referral depend on the patient. 2. Daily work and tools They take a history, record findings, explain options and use clinical instruments and sterilization procedures. Follow-up and urgent care call for different priorities. 3. Education and entry In Türkiye, dentistry is a higher-education profession with clinical training. Current official rules govern practice and specialization; a short course does not grant clinical authority.
Work, responsibility and career
4. Ethics, safety and responsibility Informed consent, confidentiality, infection control and avoiding unnecessary treatment matter. Radiation and instrument safety protect patients and staff. 5. Work settings and development Work includes public and private clinics, oral health centers, academia and specialties. New evidence, materials and methods require continuing education.
