How can plagiarism be prevented?

Added: 25 October 2026

Plagiarism is presenting someone else’s idea or words as one’s own without appropriate attribution.

Key concepts and practice

Mark short direct quotations with quotation marks and a citation; paraphrased ideas also need attribution. Separate quotations from one’s own notes. Changing just a few words does not create original explanation.

Examples, evaluation and limits

Rules should clarify collaboration and AI-tool use. Similarity software can flag text but cannot alone establish intent or plagiarism. Drafts, notes and source records make the process traceable.
