What is a worked example?

Added: 25 October 2026

A worked example shows the reasoned steps of a solution, not just the final answer.

Key concepts and practice

The teacher interprets the problem, explains why a method fits and checks each step. Learners can then complete missing steps in a similar example. This can reduce unproductive trial and error when a method is new.

Examples, evaluation and limits

Repeatedly reading solutions does not guarantee transfer. Fade guidance and let students choose methods on new problems. Deliberately flawed examples can support discussion when errors are explained.
