What is instructional scaffolding?

Added: 25 October 2026

Instructional scaffolding offers temporary targeted support for a task a learner cannot yet complete alone.

Key concepts and practice

Prompts, questions, examples, checklists and task decomposition are forms of support. Observe the need first and provide enough help without doing the task for the learner. One support need not fit everyone indefinitely.

Examples, evaluation and limits

As skill develops, fade prompts and transfer responsibility. Support left indefinitely can limit independence; removing it too soon can cause frustration. Brief checks help determine timing.
