What is density?
Density is mass divided by volume and can depend on temperature and pressure.
How it works and key principles
Calculation and meaning: Equal volumes of different substances can have different masses. For a uniform sample, divide measured mass by volume; a mixture’s density depends on composition. A larger piece has more mass, but its intrinsic density is the same under the same conditions.
Evidence, examples and limits
Floating and limits: A submerged object receives a buoyant force equal to the weight of fluid it displaces. Objects with lower average density can float; a ship’s hollow structure affects its overall average density. Gas density values need temperature and pressure for meaningful comparison.
