What is a statement of claim?

Added: 25 October 2026

A statement of claim sets out the relief requested from a court, the facts and the demand.

Key concepts and application

Identify parties, events, legal relationship, evidence and requested relief clearly. Link assertions to documents; a lengthy narrative does not cure an unclear demand. Check procedural form and cost requirements.

Rights, procedure and limits

Service can trigger the response stage. Later amendment and evidence submission depend on procedure. Copying a generic template into a specific case can create risks.
