What is cultural transmission?
Cultural transmission is the learning and reinterpretation of knowledge, skills and stories across people and generations.
Origins, forms and everyday life
Families, apprenticeships, schools, community gatherings and digital records provide different channels. A traditional song or craft is more than an object or text: skills, context and participation also pass between people.
Meaning, change and safeguarding
Selection and change are normal. Imposing one supposedly authentic form can weaken a living practice. Sustainable safeguarding gives practitioners a voice and makes room for younger generations to learn.
