What is public art?
Public art is artistic work encountered in shared spaces and shaped by a relationship to those places.
Origins, forms and everyday life
Sculpture, murals, sound installations and temporary performances take different forms. Meaning depends on site history, users and maintenance as well as artistic intent. Public art need not be permanent.
Meaning, change and safeguarding
Discuss location, access, safety and community participation early. Maintenance budgets and removal conditions are design questions too, alongside varied claims on shared space.
