What is oral history?

Added: 25 October 2026

Oral history records and studies people’s lived experiences through interviews and contextual interpretation.

Origins, forms and everyday life

Prepare open questions, recording consent and storage terms. Compare memories with documents when possible. A narrative reveals both events and how a person now understands them; one interview cannot represent a whole past.

Meaning, change and safeguarding

Discuss privacy, withdrawal and access limits clearly with interviewees. Archives should preserve date, place and context; quotations should not distort the speaker’s account.
