What is a lament?
A lament expresses grief over death, separation or collective loss through words and often melody.
Origins, forms and everyday life
Forms and performance settings differ among communities. Some laments are sung in ceremonies; others recall an event later. Lyrics may carry a person’s life, the circumstances of loss and survivors’ feelings together.
Meaning, change and safeguarding
Recording and publication should respect mourners’ privacy. Read a lament alongside its performance context and other sources rather than treating it as a complete factual record.
