What is a cultural landscape?
A cultural landscape is a place shaped by long relationships between people and their environment.
Origins, forms and everyday life
Gardens, agricultural terraces, sacred sites and historic settlements can be examples. Value arises from land use, natural processes, local knowledge and visual relationships, not just one building. UNESCO recognizes different landscape types.
Meaning, change and safeguarding
Conservation should consider livelihoods and ecological change. A landscape is not an empty view; local communities’ uses and decisions belong in the process.
