How should learning analytics data be interpreted?
Learning analytics examines interaction data from digital environments to understand learning and improve support.
Core approach and implementation process
Logins, video viewing, time on task and clicks are behavioral traces, not learning itself. A long-open page may mean study or absence; short time may mean expertise or skimming. Traces are combined with performance, products, self-report and observation. Correlation does not prove that a behavior causes success.
Classroom practice, monitoring and cautions
Early-warning models should trigger timely support rather than punishment. Data purpose is explained, unnecessary data is not retained and access is limited. Algorithms can reproduce past inequality, so false positives and group performance are monitored. Human contact and the ability to challenge a decision remain essential.
