How can open-ended responses be scored reliably?
Open-ended responses can reveal reasoning, but reliable scoring requires clear criteria, exemplars and scorer training.
Core approach and implementation process
Analytic rubrics separate accuracy, evidence, organization and language, while holistic rubrics judge overall quality. Levels use observable performance rather than vague words such as good. Scorers calibrate on sample answers and discuss boundary cases. Masking identity where possible reduces bias.
Classroom practice, monitoring and cautions
A sample is double-scored to monitor agreement, with retraining when drift appears. Rubrics remain flexible enough not to punish valid unexpected solutions. Mechanical language errors do not dominate when they are not the target. Learners receive feedback on how to improve each criterion, not only a score.
