How should a percentile rank be interpreted?
A percentile rank shows approximately what percentage of scores in a comparison group are at or below a learner's score.
Core approach and implementation process
Eighty percent correct differs from the 80th percentile. One is item proportion and the other relative position. Percentiles are not equal intervals; a small raw difference near the center may change rank more than at extremes. Age, language and date of the norm group determine meaning.
Classroom practice, monitoring and cautions
A percentile does not identify missing skills or create an instructional plan. Progress comparisons require equivalent scales and suitable norms. Small rank changes may fall within measurement error. Families and learners should hear it as a comparison from one measurement, not a label of superiority.
