What does standard error of measurement mean?
The standard error of measurement estimates how much an observed score may vary across repeated comparable measurements of the same ability.
Core approach and implementation process
A score combines underlying competence with error from item sampling, attention and conditions. Higher reliability generally reduces standard error. Reporting an interval around a score prevents treating a tiny difference such as 78 versus 79 as exact. Error may not be equal for every learner or score level.
Classroom practice, monitoring and cautions
Near a cut score, additional evidence or retesting is preferable to certainty from one administration. Standard error does not replace classroom feedback; item evidence shows strengths and needs. Reports explain intervals plainly. Statistical uncertainty means limits are known, not that measurement is useless.
