Why do cities sprawl outward?

Added: 27 October 2026

Urban sprawl is the low-density, fragmented expansion of built-up land toward the city edge.

Formation process and geographic mechanism

Cheaper edge land, car access, new roads, large lots and expensive central housing can encourage sprawl. Separating homes, jobs and shopping lengthens daily travel. Different municipal zoning and infrastructure subsidies also shape the pattern. Population growth contributes, but the same population can be housed more compactly.

Spatial outcomes, measurement and management

Sprawl can fragment farms and habitats, raise per-person infrastructure costs and increase car dependence. Compact growth alone does not guarantee affordability; housing supply, green space and transport capacity require joint planning. Satellites, density, road length and job-access measures are used to track effects.
