Why does river flow vary by season?
A river regime is the pattern of discharge through the year and reflects water inputs and storage across its basin.
Formation process and geographic mechanism
Rain timing, snow accumulation and melt, evaporative demand and soil storage determine when flow rises. Snow-fed rivers may peak in spring or early summer, while monsoon rivers peak in the wet season. Lakes, wetlands and groundwater can smooth abrupt changes. Thus basins with equal annual rainfall may have different regimes.
Spatial outcomes, measurement and management
Dams, irrigation, urban surfaces and land cover alter natural regimes. Monthly averages can hide short flood extremes, requiring daily and hourly records. Climate change may advance snowmelt and reduce summer low flows. Water management must balance ecosystem flows, energy, farming and flood safety.
