When are educational simulations useful?
An educational simulation lets learners experience important relationships in a real system through a safe controllable model.
Core approach and implementation process
Learners change variables and observe outcomes, repeating expensive, dangerous or slow processes quickly. A simulation is a model, so omitted variables matter as much as included goals. Visual realism does not always improve learning; unnecessary detail can shift attention from relationships to interface.
Classroom practice, monitoring and cautions
Learners predict before, record data during and explain after; merely playing does not ensure conceptual learning. Comparison with real measurements reveals model limits. Technical access, devices and disability needs are planned. Scoring should not confuse interface skill with subject knowledge.
