What is Limitation period?

Added: 24 October 2026

A limitation period affects enforcement of a claim after the statutory time has elapsed. It is not the same as saying the obligation never arose.

Definition and legal framework

1. Scope Turkish obligations law provides different starting points and periods for different claims. Suspension and interruption can change calculation, so no universal period applies. 2. How it works Limitation commonly matters as a defense raised by a debtor. Procedure affects when and how it is asserted. Payment, acknowledgment or filing may have distinct effects.

Consequences and application

3. Rights, conditions and exceptions It differs from a forfeiture deadline. Expiry need not erase every consequence of the obligation. Criminal, tax and administrative periods have separate regimes. 4. Practical considerations Document accrual, maturity, special law and any interrupting events. Do not apply one online number to every case; timely review of formal options matters.
