What is eSIM?
eSIM is embedded SIM technology allowing compatible devices to download and manage mobile subscription profiles remotely.
How it works and where it is used
A profile may be added without swapping a plastic card, and some devices store several profiles. This is different from how many lines can be active simultaneously; device and carrier support determine that. Activation may use a QR code, app or carrier workflow. Travel data profiles can be convenient.
Limits, safety and selection criteria
Transfer and lost-device recovery vary by carrier. Do not share activation codes or account access; SIM-swap fraud remains possible. Verify device region, carrier support and lock status before buying. A traveler might add a local data profile while keeping their original number, but must choose which line handles calls, messages and data. A deleted profile may require carrier re-issuance rather than reuse of the same QR code. Remove active profiles and linked accounts before selling a device. An “eSIM capable” label does not guarantee service with every carrier or in every country. Check connectivity during activation, identity checks and charges before switching plans.
