How is a lesson planned with backward design?
Backward design plans learning outcomes and evidence of success before selecting activities.
Core approach and implementation process
The process first states what learners should understand and do independently. It then defines a performance, question or product that genuinely demonstrates that outcome. Explanations, examples, practice and feedback are selected last to prepare learners for the evidence. This prevents attractive but unrelated activities from dominating the lesson.
Classroom practice, monitoring and cautions
Alignment is checked across goals, assessment and instruction; a recall-only quiz cannot measure deep application. Plans adapt to prior knowledge and accessibility. Backward design does not remove responsive teaching but provides an intentional frame. Evidence after the lesson informs revision.
