When should guided practice end?
Guided practice is the controlled transition between teacher-supported work and independent performance.
Core approach and implementation process
Questions, cues, partial steps and immediate feedback help learners use the correct process. Removing support too early can stabilize errors, while removing it too late creates dependence. Decisions use accuracy, explanation and correction across varied examples rather than question count alone. The whole class need not be ready simultaneously.
Classroom practice, monitoring and cautions
Cues can be faded systematically from strong to light or in reverse, and recording support reveals true independence. If errors rise in independent work, brief guidance can return. The goal is not zero error but the ability to notice and correct. Delayed checks in a new context verify retention.
