What Must You Do After a Thesis Defense?
A committee's acceptance of a thesis at the defense does not instantly produce a diploma. The decision record, revisions, final formatting review, approval page, national thesis metadata form, and deposit are separate stages. Pamukkale University's graduate institute sets out its own post defense period and forms, while Bursa Technical University provides detailed instructions for final files and appendices. An acceptance and a formal revision decision start different timelines. Obtain your own institute's current checklist before the defense so that the scientific result can move through the administrative process without avoidable delay.
Decision and the final manuscript
1. Establish the exact decision. A jury may accept, request revisions, or reject according to the applicable rules, and a formal record must reach the institute. Verbal congratulations are not an official signed decision. Necmettin Erbakan University's institute distinguishes minor corrections after acceptance from the process following a revision decision. Its document deadlines are institutional examples. Ask your supervisor which changes are mandatory, who must approve them, and whether a second defense is required. Record the defense date and the date on which the institute formally communicates the decision; different rules may use different starting points. 2. Finalize the text against the guide. Turn the committee's comments into a checklist for method, references, tables, appendices, and consistency of the abstract. The current institute writing guide controls cover pages, pagination, signatures, and PDF construction. Do not submit the file sent to the jury as if it were already the final copy. Recheck citations and bibliography after every revision. If a similarity report or adviser certification is required again, make sure it concerns the final version. Borrowing a cover or naming convention from another institute can cause an administrative rejection even when the argument is sound. 3. Separate signed and public versions. A paper archive may request an approval page with signatures while the PDF placed in an online repository may exclude that page or personal details. Bursa Technical University explains a YÖK decision concerning removal of jury personal information and wet signatures from uploads to the National Thesis Center. Confirm the version your institute expects. Appendices containing participant names, raw audio, or confidential organization data can raise independent ethics and access problems. Inspect the complete final file, not just the main chapters, before any public deposit.
Metadata, deposit, and graduation
4. Complete national thesis metadata accurately. The institute's list may include signing in to the National Thesis Center with e-Devlet, filling a thesis data entry form, keywords, abstracts in multiple languages, and a publication permission form. Pamukkale University specifies its own number of required copies; another institute may use a different count or electronic channel. Title, author, supervisor, degree type, and year on the form should match the approved final PDF. Permission to make the full text open is not the same step as physically depositing a bound copy or passing the institute's formatting check. 5. Track separate deadlines. A post acceptance deposit window and the period for revisions after a revision decision are distinct. Pamukkale University publishes its own deadline from the defense date, and Bursa Technical University warns about late completion of corrections. Apply the provision currently in force for your program. Allow time for holidays, adviser signatures, library checks, and a possible technical rejection of the PDF. Waiting until the last day can delay administrative graduation after a successful academic defense. Keep dated receipts for every file and form. 6. Confirm graduation in the student record. After deposit receipt, format approval, library clearance, and any board decision, monitor the student information system. Ask student affairs how to obtain a temporary graduation certificate, transcript, and eventual diploma. A PDF not appearing immediately in the National Thesis Center does not prove that the institute failed to receive it; repository processing follows its own timeline. Preserve approved versions and official email notices. The most reliable final check is the institute's confirmation that all required steps have been completed together with the formal graduation entry.
