How is escape velocity determined?

Added: 27 October 2026

Escape velocity is the minimum initial speed needed to move away from a body's gravity without returning and without further thrust.

Formation, motion and physical explanation

Initial kinetic energy is compared with gravitational binding energy. The value rises with central mass, falls with distance and does not depend on the escaping object's mass.

Evidence, applications and limits

Real rockets gain energy over stages and must include atmosphere, Earth's rotation and orbital maneuvers. Gravity does not disappear during escape. Conclusions about distant objects rely on testing images, spectra, time variation and physical models together.
