How does Crohn disease present?

Added: 28 October 2026

Crohn disease is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease that can affect any part of the digestive tract from mouth to anus. Symptoms and risks vary, and similar complaints occur in different illnesses, so internet information alone should not be used for diagnosis.

Symptoms, causes and evaluation

1. Symptoms and effects Persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss, fever, mouth ulcers or perianal problems may occur; joint, skin and eye signs can accompany it. Symptoms may flare and remit. Onset, duration and rate of change are assessed with age, pregnancy, medicines, exposures, family history and other conditions. Having a risk factor does not guarantee disease, and lacking one does not exclude it. 2. Clinical evaluation A health professional begins with history and examination and selects laboratory, imaging or function tests according to clinical probability. One result outside a reference range does not always prove disease, while a normal result may not exclude every possibility. Timing, sample conditions and method limitations can affect results. 3. Distinguishing similar conditions The circumstances of onset, aggravating-relieving factors and effect on daily function matter. Self-diagnosis, using another person's prescription or dismissing a serious sign as anxiety is unsafe.

Follow-up, prevention and urgent signs

1. Follow-up, treatment and prevention Blood-stool tests, endoscopy and imaging are combined while infection is excluded. Severe constant pain, a rigid-distended abdomen, bleeding, high fever or inability to drink is urgent. Treatment is planned from the confirmed diagnosis, severity, organ involvement, pregnancy, other medicines and personal preferences. Starting, stopping or changing prescription treatment without advice can cause harm. 2. Everyday safety A symptom diary, current medicine-allergy list and preparation for follow-up can help. Online diets, supplements and herbal products do not replace treatment; they can interact with medicines or alter laboratory results. 3. When to seek help New, persistent, worsening or function-limiting symptoms require clinical assessment. Sudden breathlessness, chest pain, fainting, new weakness or speech difficulty, uncontrolled bleeding, severe dehydration, seizure or confusion requires emergency help. This is general information, not a personal medical assessment.
