How does an interference pattern form?

Added: 27 October 2026

An interference pattern is a regular distribution formed when overlapping waves reinforce or weaken one another according to phase.

Physical mechanism and core principles

Two crests increase amplitude, while a crest and trough can partly or fully cancel. A stable pattern requires sufficiently steady frequency and phase relationships.

Evidence, applications and limits

Double-slit fringes vary with wavelength, slit spacing and screen distance. Thin-film colors and noise cancellation apply the same superposition principle. Quantitative interpretation must state boundary conditions, units and ideal-model assumptions.
