How Do You Apply for a University Makeup Exam?
Missing a university examination because of illness or another serious event does not automatically create a right to a second sitting. The types of examinations covered, acceptable documentation, and application deadline depend on the university and sometimes the faculty. Doğuş University's regulation lists certain documented circumstances for midterm makeup exams while excluding a makeup for its resit exams. Iğdır University's student affairs guidance directs students to its local rules and submission periods. Record and document the event promptly, then check which procedure actually applies to the assessment you missed.
Determine scope and apply
1. Identify the examination type. A midterm, final, resit, quiz, laboratory assessment, and online test need not have the same makeup rules. In the Doğuş University example, certain documented circumstances can support a midterm makeup, but a makeup is not offered for the resit. Do not generalize that university's scope to your own program. Open the course syllabus, academic calendar, and current examination regulation together. If a final is not covered under an applicable provision, missing it alone does not create a new sitting. Ask the relevant office which article applies to the exact exam. 2. Document the event appropriately. For an illness, an acceptable medical document may need to establish dates and examination timing. An accident, death of a close relative, or other qualifying event may require different official evidence. Do not assume that every medical note is automatically accepted; the issuing body, period, and connection with the missed exam can matter. Doğuş University's rule describes its own duration and documentary conditions for some health grounds. Submit clear, unaltered evidence and avoid circulating sensitive details beyond the receiving office. Keep copies of the documents and record when you obtained them. 3. Send a timely petition to the designated unit. Identify your student number, program, course code, exam date, period of incapacity, and requested makeup assessment. List attachments and a contact route. Iğdır University's guidance says to identify the courses and provide supporting documents through the relevant local procedure. Informing the instructor can be useful, but a message may not replace formal registration of a request. Learn the deadline from the current notice and retain a stamped receipt or electronic reference number. If the reason for absence continues, ask about an authorized remote or representative submission route.
Decision and the replacement examination
4. Await the authorized decision. The faculty board or another competent unit may evaluate whether a reason is valid. Filing a petition is not the same as being granted an exam. Track whether the application was registered, and ask how to complete missing evidence within the rules. Clashing exams, official sporting duties, or a technical access failure may require different evidence from an illness. Keep a written decision if one is issued. If rejected, check the available correction or objection route and its deadline rather than relying on an informal assurance that a makeup will be scheduled. 5. Confirm the new exam details. The authorized unit announces the date, location or online connection, and assessment scope of an approved makeup. Do not assume the original questions will be repeated or that you can choose a convenient date. The consequence of missing the new sitting is also governed by local rules. Check identification requirements, access arrangements, and last minute notices. After the exam, verify that the result is entered in the student system. A later claim of a clerical grading error may have a separate appeal period beginning with the publication of that result. 6. Keep procedures distinct. A makeup request concerns an exam you could not take. A grade appeal concerns a published result. Leave of absence and attendance exemptions address different problems. A long illness does not necessarily have all of its attendance effects resolved by a decision on one midterm. Ask your adviser about the course plan. Confirm, one by one, the exam type, accepted grounds, documents, deadline, and decision maker in your own faculty's current rules. Retaining the notice and proof of submission reduces both missed rights and unwarranted expectations.
