How do Lagrange points work?

Added: 27 October 2026

Lagrange points are five regions where a small object can maintain a relative position around two massive bodies with limited correction.

Formation, motion and physical explanation

In the rotating frame, the two gravitational effects and apparent centrifugal effect balance at special positions. L1-L3 are unstable, while L4-L5 can be more stable.

Evidence, applications and limits

Sun-Earth L1 supports solar monitoring and L2 deep-space telescopes. Spacecraft orbit around the point and still perform station-keeping. Conclusions about distant objects rely on testing images, spectra, time variation and physical models together.
