Why do avocado leaf tips turn brown?

Added: 3 November 2026

Brown avocado leaf tips can be associated with water stress, salt accumulation or root problems. Chloride and sodium exposure are particularly relevant, but a brown tip alone cannot establish that irrigation water is responsible.

Assessing the pattern of damage

1. Injury starting at tips and edges Salt-associated injury may begin at leaf tips and margins. Accumulation mainly on older leaves is a clue to assess alongside irrigation and fertiliser history. Isolated lesions in the middle of leaves or different patterns between veins may suggest other causes. Dead tissue will not turn green again, so evaluate care changes through newly developing leaves. Cutting away every brown edge does not demonstrate that the underlying cause has been corrected and may remove evidence useful for diagnosis. Photograph representative leaves before making cosmetic changes. 2. Separate water quality from fertiliser salts Irrigation water can carry minerals, while excess fertiliser also increases dissolved salts in the root environment. Do not automatically blame either tap water alone or feeding alone when tips brown. Electrical conductivity provides information about overall salinity but cannot identify the problematic ion by itself. Water and root-medium analyses may be needed. Different rootstocks and other fruit species can respond differently to the same water source. A neighbouring plant that looks healthy therefore does not prove that the water is suitable for avocado. 3. Drought and poorly aerated roots Avocado roots are sensitive to water-management problems. A dry root zone restricts water delivery to leaves, while persistent saturation can impair root function. Leaf injury may occur in either situation. A pot can look dry at the surface while remaining wet below, so do not judge only the top layer. In newly planted trees, assess the original root ball separately from surrounding soil. Increasing watering frequency for a tree with unhealthy roots may worsen its decline rather than correct the apparent water shortage.

Adjusting care according to the cause

4. Confirm drainage before leaching Leaching can help manage salt accumulation in some systems, but water must be able to drain freely. Adding large volumes to poorly drained soil may leave roots deprived of air for prolonged periods. In containers, clear drainage holes, an appropriate medium and avoiding standing saucer water are important. Commercial leaching requirements are calculated from water and soil analyses. At home, identifying the source of salts and the characteristics of the medium is a sounder starting point than applying an arbitrary large volume. 5. Sun, wind and root volume Hot, dry wind increases water loss, while suddenly exposing a shade-grown tree to strong sunlight creates a separate burn risk. Damage restricted to the exposed side is a useful observation. A root-filled container may also provide limited available water. Immediate root pruning or moving into a vastly larger pot is not an automatic solution, however. Adjust care gradually with regard to tree age, growing region, rootstock information and season. These details help distinguish environmental exposure from a problem originating primarily within the root environment. 6. Record progress and seek assistance Keep records of watering intervals, fertiliser use, water source and new leaf condition. Inspect leaf undersides for pests; avocado lace bug, for example, can produce a different distribution of injury. General wilting, a thinning canopy and branch decline also warrant professional assessment of possible root diseases. Changing several products simultaneously makes the result difficult to interpret. Analysis-led correction and monitoring new growth provide more useful evidence than repeatedly altering the appearance of old damaged leaves, which remain brown even after conditions improve.
