What Does a W Grade Mean When You Withdraw from a University Course?

Added: 4 November 2026

At some universities, a formal withdrawal after the semester begins leaves a W on the transcript. It is different from removing a course during the initial add drop period. Özyeğin University's student services page describes withdrawal through its information system within dates set by the academic calendar and records the W mark. İzmir Ekonomi University specifies additional restrictions, including certain compulsory courses in the first two semesters. The effect on grades, retaking a requirement, financial support, and graduation must be checked under your own institution's current rules. Attendance stopping by itself does not complete an official withdrawal.

Check eligibility and timing

1. Name the right transaction. Changing registration during add drop and formally withdrawing from a registered course later are distinct academic actions. Özyeğin University's guidance identifies a withdrawal period on the academic calendar and an online SIS transaction. Simply ceasing attendance or missing the final exam is not a withdrawal application. Keep a confirmation screen or message showing that the transaction was completed. If a further approval is required, submitting an initial request may not be enough. Verify the course no longer appears as an active enrollment before assuming the W will be entered. 2. Inspect restricted courses. İzmir Ekonomi University excludes compulsory courses in the first two terms under its own rules, while treating some electives and later courses differently. Özyeğin University's page states a per term limit and says students cannot withdraw from all their courses. These are institutional examples. Your program may add rules for compulsory, repeated, prerequisite, final year, or minimum load courses. Find out whether the adviser or instructor must approve the transaction and at which step. A general statement that withdrawal is possible does not override a specific restriction on the course you are taking. 3. Calculate consequences before the deadline. Withdrawal windows may close around mid semester, according to the academic calendar. Recalculate your remaining ECTS and credit load, and check conditions for full time status, scholarships, accommodation, or exchange mobility where relevant. The current term average may look better without a poorly performing course, but the required credits and compulsory subjects for graduation do not disappear. Consider whether a prerequisite delays later courses. Withdrawal is not an unlimited repeatable method of repairing weak grades. Confirm the exact deadline and complete any approvals with time to spare.

Read the W and plan the retake

4. Interpret the transcript entry. W denotes a withdrawal, not successful completion of a course. Özyeğin says the symbol appears on the grade report. Whether it is included in a weighted average, how a prior attempt is treated, and whether credits count toward progress depend on local regulations. Özyeğin also explains a specific treatment of the last previous grade when withdrawing from a repeated course. Another university may apply a different calculation. Compare the resulting term and cumulative figures in the student system with the applicable published grade rules, rather than treating W as a uniform national grade. 5. Plan the next enrollment. If the course is compulsory, identify its next offering, available places, and any dependent courses with your adviser. If it is an elective, ask whether another option from the same group can fulfill the requirement. A program may limit total withdrawals across the degree; İzmir Ekonomi University's regulations provide such a program wide limit. The important question is which course and term will replace the lost progress. Check summer offerings and alternative sections separately. A W may avoid a current failure, but it does not finish an outstanding requirement. 6. Verify the transaction in the records. Online systems can be busy on the last day, so request withdrawal early enough to allow for approvals. If the official transcript or registration status does not show the expected result, contact student affairs immediately with the course code and transaction receipt. A health based absence, formal leave, or disciplinary issue uses another process. An instructor's verbal consent cannot remove a regulatory restriction on withdrawal. Save the dated confirmation and later transcript entry; they help identify and correct a data entry error before it affects the next term's registration.
