How should special quota rows in the YKS guide be interpreted?
A YKS programme table may show seats for specific applicant categories alongside the general quota. The applicable ÖSYM guide defines who falls within each category, how status is documented and how unused places are handled. The presence of a special quota does not itself prove an individual’s eligibility or guarantee placement. Read the programme code, quota column and referenced conditions together in the guide for the actual year.
Matching the row and column
1. How do general and special columns differ? Do not combine the general quota and separate category numbers printed for the same programme code. Read every column heading and any symbol legend in the official guide. A candidate having more than one personal circumstance does not mean quotas can simply be added together. The applicable guide governs category use and placement order. A cropped screenshot may omit the headings that give a number its meaning. Open the complete table and verify the particular programme row. Similar degrees at two universities may have quite different capacities and category details. Use the correct score-type line as well. 2. How is a category defined? Do not derive eligibility for school-first, age-related or social categories from their everyday labels alone. Read the definition, documentation and timing conditions for that year. ÖSYM’s 2026 school-first announcement illustrates a candidate checking the recorded status in AİS; it does not establish identical steps for every other category. Compare personal supporting documents with the official record. Believing that you meet a definition is not the same as the institution having recognized the status in its system. Contact the responsible official channel for a case-specific discrepancy. 3. What does an empty cell mean? A blank, dash or zero in a special-category column may have a particular meaning defined by the table legend. Do not assume it means that everyone can apply or that conditions have disappeared. Capacity in the general column does not itself imply a seat in a different category. A scholarship, teaching-language or campus variant can change the numbers even when the degree title looks similar. Inspect the entire programme row, score type and condition notes before making a decision from any single cell. If the guide has been revised, confirm that the viewed table is current.
Checking individual eligibility
4. Where is the placement order explained? The year’s preference guide is the authority for the order in which categories are evaluated, their relationship to general places and treatment of unused seats. Earlier guides can illustrate a format but cannot promise the same rule or distribution. ÖSYM’s 2026 guide publication notice asks applicants to follow the edition republished during preferences and later notices. Do not memorize a historic rule about transferring unused quota. If a row remains unclear, identify its programme code and footnote when seeking an explanation from ÖSYM. Keep that response with the guide edition used for the decision. 5. What does eligibility accomplish? Recognition of a category does not waive a programme’s score type, ranking threshold or special conditions. Check every applicable prerequisite in the guide. Other eligible candidates’ rankings and choices also affect allocation, especially where few seats are available. Last year’s unused capacity does not make this year’s placement certain. Judge your situation against the official announcement and your own current record, not an anonymous interpretation of a chart. Eligibility permits consideration under published conditions; it is not an individual guarantee of admission. A personal dispute requires review by the competent institution. 6. What is the last preference check? Match the programme code with the general and relevant special column headings, number of places, footnotes and documentation rule in a private checklist. Confirm that the saved AİS preference points to the same programme. Update your notes if a revised guide appears. A special-category claim does not justify publishing confidential evidence in a social-media group. Follow the official route and deadline for that year. This reading method helps interpret a table but cannot determine whether a particular individual will be recognized for or admitted through a special category without examining the authoritative personal record.
