How do you water a staghorn fern, and should brown basal fronds be removed?

Added: 3 November 2026

Staghorn fern is recognized by the forked fronds of Platycerium bifurcatum. Rounded shield fronds lying against the pot or mounting surface commonly become brown as they age; do not pull them away as though they were dry rubbish. Successful care depends on an airy root environment, bright filtered light and watering based on how the root package is drying.

Identification, light and watering

1. Distinguish the roles of the two frond types Shield fronds cover the root area, lie against the supporting surface and collect leaf litter in nature. The long antler-shaped fronds photosynthesize and may carry spore structures on their undersides. Brown shields do not mean that the entire plant is dead. A softening growing center with an unpleasant smell is a different situation. Observing where new fronds emerge helps avoid accidental damage to the sensitive area during care; do not repeatedly lift shields to expose the roots. 2. Living on trees does not mean being parasitic This fern uses other plants for support in nature without extracting their sap. At home it can be mounted on suitable wood or bark with an airy root package, or grown in a pot with a free-draining epiphytic mix. Ordinary heavy garden soil is unsuitable. Remember that a mounted specimen may lose water faster than one in a pot. Assuming that both growing forms of the same species must be watered on identical days may leave roots either excessively wet or too dry. 3. Light and the frond surface Provide bright but filtered light, protected from hot midday sun. The fine grayish felt on antler fronds is a natural surface. Do not rub it away as dust or apply leaf shine. Adding nutrients alone will not create strong fronds when light is inadequate. When assessing a hanging specimen, check whether the upper window frame casts shade. Make any necessary move gradually; remember that stronger summer sun can develop in the same position.

Seasonal care, propagation and problems

4. Water according to the root package Allow the mix or mounting moss to dry slightly, without leaving it completely dry for a prolonged period. The weight and inner moisture of the root package are more informative than its outer surface alone. Moisten it thoroughly and let all excess water drain; the pot or base of the mount should not stand in pooled water. Drying may slow under lower winter light. Spraying the fronds alone does not water a dried root package; a continuously wet, airless package is not a safe source of moisture either. 5. Feeding and separating pups Suitable low-strength fertilizer can be used during active growth. Stuffing banana peel or kitchen waste behind a shield does not deliver necessary nutrients in a controlled way and may increase insect and rot problems. Pups emerging from the rhizome can be separated carefully once sufficiently developed, but a piece of frond without a growing point and roots is not a new plant. When renewing a mount, do not forcibly strip shields and expose the whole root system. The aim is to support the plant rather than compress its root area with hard material. 6. Spores, pests and disease checks Do not scrape regular brown spore-bearing areas beneath antler fronds. Separate cottony clusters, moving small insects or fine webbing instead call for pest investigation. Check for mealybugs, aphids and mites, and separate a suspect plant. Black patches may develop in excessively humid, stagnant conditions; improve airflow and review root wetness. Because fronds are delicate, follow the label when selecting a product; do not scrub vigorously to remove their natural felt.
