How can place value be taught with base-ten blocks?

Added: 4 November 2026

Base-ten blocks make visible how a digit’s value depends on its place. Trading units for tens, building a numeral such as 305 with an empty tens place and linking blocks to symbols all matter. The goal is not only to count objects but to explain the same quantity in a drawing, numeral and spoken account. Instruction gradually moves beyond the physical model.

Making the decimal structure visible

1. Show ones, tens and hundreds together If a learner reads 234 merely as the digits “two, three, four,” positional value may be lost. Build it with two hundred flats, three ten rods and four unit cubes and state the sum 200 + 30 + 4. Compare 243: the same digits appear, but the quantities of tens and ones change. Discuss how the size of each object relates to the quantity it stands for. The model makes the composition of a number visible beyond memorizing the names of places. Ask the pupil to explain why swapping digits changes the value. 2. Trade ten ones for one ten Add one unit cube to nine units, making ten in the ones place. Exchange those ten cubes for one ten rod and explain why the total value remains unchanged. In 29 + 1 = 30, “carry one” now describes a relationship: ten ones are recorded as a ten. Try the same trade with 19, 39 and 109. A zero digit means no separate quantity in that place; it is not a digit that can simply be ignored. Physical exchange makes the unit structure of decimal notation inspectable. 3. Connect the symbols to the model After building a quantity, record its digits in a hundreds-tens-ones chart. State separately that three ten rods means the digit 3 in the tens place and a value of 30. Work in reverse: given 305, select three hundred flats, no ten rods and five cubes. Some learners may read 305 as 35; the empty tens place becomes visible in the model. Blocks need not be used forever on every problem. Gradually reduce support when a learner can connect numeral, spoken quantity and blocks independently while still explaining the link.

From blocks to independent place-value explanation

4. Compare quantities rather than only digits The numbers 308 and 380 use the same digits. Compare hundreds first, then tens and ones. Side-by-side models show the difference between eight tens in 380 and no tens in 308. The pupil should say more than “8 is greater than 0”: here 80 is greater than zero. With 299 and 301, discuss how a change in hundreds can outweigh many tens. The visual arrangement is a means of reasoning about actual quantity, not a trick to pick the largest-looking numeral. Ask what each comparison step rules out. 5. Move from blocks to sketches and mental explanation Use physical blocks first, then a quick square for a hundred, a line for a ten and a dot for a one. Sketch 146 and write 100 + 40 + 6. Eventually compare 146 and 164 without drawing while explaining the place values. A learner who manipulates blocks but never connects them to symbols may remain dependent on the material. Do not withdraw support abruptly; return to the model at a place the pupil confuses. The goal is to preserve the same reasoning across concrete, drawn, numerical and verbal representations. 6. Use fresh examples to diagnose errors Offer 407, 470 and 74. Ask for blocks, expanded form and a spoken description, including why 407 is not 47. Continuing to count ten ones as separate units may show an incomplete exchange idea. Confusing 470 with 407 suggests a positional difficulty. Attend to the explanation, not solely a correct numeral. Blocks are neither the only way to teach place value nor a guarantee of success. Modeling must be tied to discussion, suitable practice and a new context in which the learner can explain the quantity without the teacher’s prompt.
