Why is the proboscis monkey's nose so large?
The proboscis monkey is a primate of Borneo's riverine and mangrove forests, especially notable for the male's large nose.
Body structure, habitat and adaptation
The male nose may act as a resonating structure that amplifies calls and serves as a sexual signal related to body size. It may influence female choice and assessment among males. The large belly reflects a multi-chambered, microbe-assisted digestive system that ferments leaves and unripe fruit. Appearance alone does not explain a mammal's way of life; skeleton, senses, metabolism and behavior are considered together. Individuals of the same species may differ across regions with food, climate and human pressure. Scientific observation does not treat one animal as an unchanging model for the whole species.
Behavior, ecological role and conservation
Groups feed in trees, often sleep near rivers and swim well, aided by partial webbing between digits. Conversion of mangrove and floodplain forest for agriculture, roads and settlement is a major threat. River corridors connect changing feeding areas. Conservation tracks not only total numbers but also connectivity, breeding success, genetic diversity and habitat quality. Local coexistence measures, corridors and law enforcement work together. Wild animals should not be fed or treated as pets, and observation should remain at a safe distance.
