How can kohlrabi be grown in a container?

Added: 3 November 2026

Kohlrabi is grown for its swollen stem above the soil and can produce a crop in a suitably sized container. Plants growing steadily in cool conditions, with consistent moisture and without crowding, develop better texture. The aim is not simply the largest possible bulb, but a good-quality stem harvested at a size appropriate to the variety before becoming fibrous. Distinguish the space and harvest expectations of standard varieties from those of giant types.

Growing conditions for kohlrabi’s swollen stem

1. Recognise that the edible swelling is a stem Kohlrabi is identified as Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes. It should not be confused with turnips or radishes: its round edible portion is a stem enlarging immediately above the soil surface. There is therefore no need to keep covering it as though it were an underground root crop. Varieties have green or purple skins, but skin colour alone does not indicate the quality of the flesh. Choose seed of an edible variety and record the packet’s expected maturity period and harvest size. 2. Choose a container for the variety’s development Use a container with drainage holes, enough depth for roots and enough room around each plant for the stem to expand. Keeping numerous seedlings in a small pot does not increase the number of large harvests; it increases competition. Giant types may need wider spacing than standard types. Use a clean mix with a known nutrient status that retains moisture evenly. Do not reuse medium unchanged if it previously supported a serious Brassica root disease. Avoid a heavy, compacted structure that remains waterlogged. 3. Schedule sowing for cool, steady growth Good-quality kohlrabi depends on steady growth that avoids periods of excessive heat and insufficient water. One calendar month cannot suit both coastal and inland Turkey. Consider local temperature trends, frost risk and the variety’s estimated growing period together. Prolonged cold at a susceptible seedling stage can lead to subsequent bolting. Excessive heat can also limit quality. Being a cool-season vegetable does not mean the plant is unaffected by every frost at every growth stage.

Steady growth and harvesting for the variety

4. Thin or transplant seedlings at the right time Sow at the packet’s recommended depth and maintain balanced moisture throughout emergence. Thinning surplus seedlings early improves the remaining plants’ access to light and root space. Keep indoor-raised seedlings in enough light and acclimatise them gradually when moving outdoors. When transplanting, maintain the previous growing level rather than burying the stem that needs to swell. Breaking up the root ball and leaving a plant without water for a long time interrupts steady development. Do not judge a thin, stretched seedling as vigorous simply because it is tall. 5. Manage water together with harvesting Kohlrabi grown without heat or moisture stress develops a crisper, juicier texture. Water according to drying in the container medium, without leaving permanent standing water below. Apply a fertiliser suitable for vegetables according to its label; excess fertiliser does not eliminate growing stress. Waiting for excessive size in standard varieties can increase the risk of fibrous flesh, but the same small diameter limit should not be imposed on giant varieties. Assess the variety guidance alongside actual texture. Harvest with clean tools; healthy leaves can also be used as part of the edible crop. 6. Separate leaf pests from development problems Holes, yellowing or stalled growth do not identify a single cause. Look under leaves for caterpillars and aphids and examine young foliage for small feeding marks. Begin with suitable insect mesh, hand picking and management of weeds and debris, while preventing overheating under covers. Do not automatically interpret a small stem as insect damage. Any necessary plant-protection product must be approved for kohlrabi and the identified target, and the label instructions and required waiting interval before harvest must be observed.
