What is project-based learning?

Project-based learning involves investigating a meaningful question or problem, designing a response, acting on it and revising a product.

Project structure

Students studying water use in a school garden could measure consumption, interpret data and propose a feasible change. Learning goals should be explicit beforehand, with criteria for inquiry, source quality and the expected product. While learners make decisions, teachers teach subject knowledge, correct misconceptions and provide feedback along the way. Making a poster or copying web material alone does not produce deep learning.

Assessment and access

Evaluate explanations, evidence and individual contributions during the process as well as the final product. If access to materials and help at home differs, provide time at school and alternative resources. Break long projects into smaller stages with timely support. OECD’s focus on learner agency helps connect purposeful student action with teacher guidance.
