What is self-regulated learning?

Self-regulated learning means setting goals, monitoring study behaviour and adjusting methods in light of feedback.

Plan, act, evaluate

A learner might choose a measurable aim such as explaining the main idea of two texts this week. They schedule work, prepare resources, notice distractions and evaluate which steps helped. If the result is weak, they may ask for help, examine another example or break down the task rather than merely repeat the same approach longer. Awareness of emotions and motivation accompanies task management.

Teacher support

Independent learning does not mean leaving students without guidance. Teachers demonstrate a strategy, practise it together, gradually withdraw support and give appropriate feedback. Younger learners or beginners may need more structure. EEF links self-regulation to planning, monitoring and evaluating taught within subject content.
