Why is Lake Seyfe drying?

Added: 4 November 2026

Lake Seyfe lies in a low part of a closed tectonic basin in Kırşehir. Its water depends on the balance among rain and groundwater supply, evaporation and human use. The area of a shallow lake may vary greatly by season; a photograph alone cannot explain a prolonged decline. DSİ reports replacing an earlier drinking-water source drawn from the basin as a protective measure, but that action alone is not proof of recovery.

Closed basin, inflow and losses

1. A closed tectonic basin Lake Seyfe occupies a low part of a tectonic basin around Kırşehir. Surface runoff is directed toward it, but there is no outlet to the sea. Small differences among rainfall, groundwater inflow, evaporation and water use can therefore shift the extent of a shallow lake substantially. A dry-looking season and a long-term water budget are different questions. The official nature agency documents its closed-basin setting, low position and Ramsar status, but does not provide a live lake-level gauge in its site profile. 2. What seasonal drying means The shoreline of a shallow closed lake can move widely between wet and dry periods. Yet dismissing every retreat as ordinary seasonality may overlook prolonged drought or pressure on water supply. Evaporation removes water while salt and some dissolved substances remain, changing the chemistry of what is left. Level, surface area and salinity are separate measurements. A pale lake bed in one satellite scene does not prove that water can never return, just as one rainy year cannot prove a recovery trend. 3. How water use matters Groundwater and springs may connect to a surface wetland. In its Mucur drinking-water facility notice, DSİ describes taking older sources from the Seyfe basin out of service as a protective step. This removes a particular pressure; the announcement does not show that lake level automatically returned to a historic value. Agricultural and other uses must be evaluated with withdrawal records, wells, flows and rainfall. The timing of pumping can also matter in a shallow, seasonally variable system.

Bird habitat and reliable monitoring

4. Timing of water for birds Reeds, mudflats and shallow water around Seyfe offer feeding and stopover habitat. A completely full lake is not equally suitable for every species in every season; different depths provide access to different foods. Prolonged dry intervals, however, can interrupt habitat continuity. An old count of species or individuals cannot be presented as today’s census. Bird observations should state season, survey effort and water level, rather than being separated from the hydrological conditions that made the observation possible. 5. What protected boundaries show Ramsar, nature-reserve and natural-site designations have been mapped at different dates and with distinct boundaries. None is identical to the water surface on a particular day. Designation identifies ecological importance and management obligations, not unrestricted access to every location. The nature agency describes visitor facilities and an observation tower. Check current permits, roads and sensitive-area rules with the authority. A historic protected-area map may remain valid legally without tracing the newest shoreline. 6. Testing a drying claim Compare satellite scenes from the same season with lake-level data on a consistent vertical datum, rainfall and evaporation records, groundwater observations and withdrawal data. Exposed lake bed is an observation; assigning its sole cause requires more evidence. Do not transfer a trend from another lake without examining sub-basin boundaries and water connections. A government announcement includes Seyfe among priority lakes for action plans, but a plan is not a measured outcome. Current restoration claims need dated implementation and monitoring results.
