What is the employment rate?
The employment rate is the share of a specified age group that is employed.
Definition, calculation and mechanism
Its denominator includes the whole relevant population, unlike the unemployment rate. Part-time and full-time workers may both count as employed. Cross-country comparisons require matching age ranges and survey methods.
Interpretation, examples and limits
A rise suggests more people work but does not itself establish pay, security or productivity. Population aging affects it too. Read employment, participation and hours together.
