What is distance education?

Distance education is planned teaching and interaction that does not require teacher and learner to share a physical place.

Formats and design

Live video, recorded explanations, printed packs, radio and online platforms are different distance-learning tools. Sending material alone is insufficient: goals, tasks, feedback and a way to ask questions must be clear. Synchronous sessions allow immediate interaction; asynchronous work offers flexible timing. Short sections, clear instructions and accessible files support self-management. Practical skills may require safe exercises and, where needed, in-person experience.

Access and quality

Differences in devices, connectivity, quiet study space and digital skills can limit learning at a distance. Offline options, captions, screen-reader-compatible content and flexible deadlines matter. Teachers track progress through small checkpoints and feedback rather than treating time logged online as a measure of success. UNESCO emphasizes designing accessible distance education around learners’ circumstances.
