What is RAM?

RAM is fast working memory holding running programs and currently used data. Ordinary computer RAM is volatile: its contents do not survive a loss of power. It differs from an SSD or hard drive used to retain photographs and documents.

How do capacity and speed affect work?

Sufficient RAM allows active applications to keep required data in memory. When memory is scarce, the operating system may move some data to storage, introducing noticeable waits. Extra RAM mainly helps workloads constrained by memory; it does not automatically accelerate every task when capacity is already sufficient. Transfer rate, latency, channel arrangement and compatibility with the processor also matter. Integrated graphics may use some system RAM, changing the capacity available to applications.

How should memory usage be interpreted?

Operating systems can use spare memory for file caches, so a high usage figure alone does not establish a fault. Persistent stuttering, heavy storage activity and memory pressure should be considered together. Closing applications can provide temporary relief, but defects such as memory leaks require addressing their cause. Before an upgrade, check supported memory types and capacity limits; some devices have soldered memory. RAM is not a substitute for a backup, and unsaved changes need to be written to persistent storage.
