What is programming?

Programming creates software by translating a problem into operations a computer can execute. It includes understanding requirements, modelling data, testing and maintenance as well as writing code. Syntax matters, but solving the user’s problem is a broader task.

How do languages and execution environments relate?

Variables hold data, conditions select actions, loops repeat work and functions divide tasks into reusable pieces. Execution may involve a compiler, interpreter or combined environment; treating languages as two rigid categories oversimplifies matters. Python, JavaScript and other languages operate in different environments. HTML, which describes page structure, has a different role from a general-purpose programming language. An application may also rely on libraries, databases and external services.

Why do testing and maintenance matter?

Code running successfully does not establish correctness in every case. Tests examine intended behaviour, boundaries and error handling. Debugging systematically locates the source of a problem. Version control records changes, while clear names and documentation support maintenance. Security requires validating inputs, protecting secrets and monitoring dependencies. Code obtained from AI or the internet needs the same checks. Popularity alone does not make a language suitable for every problem: execution environment, team and requirements also matter.
