What is learning through play?
Learning through play supports children’s knowledge and skills through curiosity, exploration, experimentation and social interaction.
Learning during play
Building with blocks lets children test balance and spatial relations; role play lets them use language and consider another point of view. Free play gives children choice; in guided play, adults offer materials and questions related to a goal without taking over. Play is not always loud or dependent on special equipment. Forms should suit the child’s age, cultural context and access needs.
The adult’s role
Teachers observe, introduce useful words, ask open questions and help children interact safely. One entertaining activity cannot meet every learning goal; language, number, movement and social development need varied experiences. UNICEF emphasizes the link between play, learning and development in early childhood. Progress is observed through participation and development over time.
