What is Facts about wolves?

The grey wolf, Canis lupus, is a social canid that occupies varied habitats and prey environments across a wide range.

Groups and prey

Wolf groups often form families with breeding adults and offspring; group size changes with food and circumstances. Moving together may help hunting and care of young. Wolves can hunt herbivores such as deer and also use smaller animals. A rigid “alpha” hierarchy defined by constant fights does not always represent natural family groups. Local ecology determines prey; not every wolf pursues the same size animal.

Living alongside people

Overlap with livestock areas can create losses and concerns. Fencing, herd supervision and locally suitable measures may reduce conflict. Tracks, genetic information and repeated observation can help assess populations; a single image is insufficient. Conservation should take account of both ecological roles and livelihoods.
