What is a cell?
A cell is the fundamental structural and functional unit of life. Some organisms, including bacteria, are single-celled; plants and animals contain many specialized cells. Cells maintain boundaries, exchange materials, transform energy and use genetic information. These are coordinated processes within a regulated whole.
Basic cellular components
1. Cell membranes A membrane creates a selective boundary between the cell and its surroundings. Made from lipids and proteins, it regulates transport and participates in signaling. It is not an impermeable wall. Diffusion, transport proteins and energy-dependent transport serve different needs. 2. Prokaryotes and eukaryotes Bacteria and archaea are prokaryotes without membrane-enclosed nuclei. Eukaryotes possess nuclei and various membrane-bound organelles. Prokaryotic does not mean ineffective or biologically unsuccessful; these cells inhabit diverse environments. 3. Organelle functions Ribosomes participate in protein synthesis. Mitochondria perform important steps in eukaryotic energy metabolism. The endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus support production, processing and transport. The cytoskeleton contributes to shape, movement and internal transport.
How do cells live and cooperate?
4. Plant and animal cells Plant cells have walls and usually large central vacuoles. Photosynthetic cells contain chloroplasts, but not every plant cell photosynthesizes. Animal cells lack cell walls. These differences coexist with shared basic mechanisms. 5. Homeostasis and communication Cells regulate conditions including ion balance, pH and water content. Chemical signals coordinate activities in multicellular organisms. Responses depend on receptors and internal regulatory networks; the same signal does not affect every cell identically. 6. Division and differentiation Cell division supports growth, maintenance and reproduction. Differentiation changes gene activity to establish specialized functions. Staining and preparation can affect microscope images: a single static image does not show the full behavior of a living cell.
