What is feedback in education?

Feedback in education is information that helps learners see the gap between their current work and a learning goal and choose a next step.

Useful feedback

Generic words such as “good” or “wrong” do not show what to keep or change. “Your result is right, but your reason in step two does not fit this example; try the counterexample” is more actionable. Feedback may be spoken, written or shown through examples; its timing and volume should fit the task. Detailed comments have limited value if learners have no time to make revisions.

Dialogue and follow-up

Students can explain feedback in their own words and apply it in another attempt. Teachers check the next piece of work and may prioritise one change instead of correcting every error at once. Peer feedback also needs clear criteria and respectful language. EEF stresses designing the process by which learners receive and use feedback, rather than simply writing comments.
