What is equity in education?
Equity in education seeks to reduce economic, geographic, linguistic, social and disability-related barriers to access and learning.
Equal and fair are not identical
Giving every student the same material does not always create the same chance to learn. Screen-reader-friendly files, language support, transport, meals or free resources can remove different barriers. Fair support makes the route to a goal accessible rather than arbitrarily lowering expectations. Enrolment, attendance, participation and learning outcomes answer different questions; an enrolment rate alone does not prove equity.
Practice and monitoring
Schools can listen to students and families, identify access problems, offer support under transparent criteria and track results. Privacy must be protected; data should reveal barriers rather than stigmatise a group. Teacher preparation, accessible material and a safe environment all matter. UNESCO connects inclusion to a system’s ability to respond to different learners’ needs.
