What is digital literacy?

Digital literacy brings together the skills to access and evaluate information, create content, communicate and act safely using digital tools.

Core abilities

Entering a search query is a start; understanding a result’s source, date and purpose also matters. Learners may edit files, collaborate, read permissions, use strong passwords and question how their data is shared. Checking an image’s context or interpreting a table requires thinking beyond operating a device. Digital literacy is not memorising menus: it includes adapting to new tools and making ethical choices.

Teaching approach

A teacher can make the skill practical by having learners research a real question and compare sources. Age-appropriate privacy and online bullying issues should be discussed openly. Where access is unequal, a lack of equipment should not be mistaken for a lack of ability. UNESCO emphasizes inclusion, teacher support and defining learning goals before choosing technology.
