What is computer hardware?

Computer hardware comprises a computer’s physical parts, including its processor, memory, storage, motherboard, display and keyboard. Software specifies operations; hardware physically carries them out. Phones and servers combine the same basic functions in different designs.

How do the main components work together?

Opening a document involves reading it from storage, placing required data in RAM and executing program instructions on the processor. Graphics hardware produces an image and the display presents it. The motherboard and interconnects allow components to communicate. The power supply provides suitable electricity, while cooling removes heat. Input devices receive data and output devices present results. These roles can overlap: a touchscreen is both an input and an output device. Making one component faster does not guarantee a proportional improvement in the whole system.

How should performance, compatibility and maintenance be assessed?

A workload may be limited by processing, memory, storage or networking. Many browser tabs place demands on memory; large file transfers depend on storage; rendering three-dimensional scenes can depend on graphics hardware. Changes require attention to connectors, power, physical dimensions and operating-system support. Capacity and speed are different measurements, so additional storage does not automatically make a computer faster. Dust and excessive heat can reduce reliability. Protection against data loss from hardware failure ultimately requires a separate backup that has been tested for restoration.
